Feb. 24th, 2012 05:01 pm[In the disaster of the meteors when Ethan Hale grabbed hold of her and the lamppost to keep the both of them from being swept away and drowned in the giant waves that happened as a result, Elena Gilbert lost her converse sneakers from back home. They were running for their lives, traveling past a disaster zone, but he still couldn't help but notice that her feet were suddenly very bare. The strength of the waves that had nearly stolen their lives had taken her shoes from home. The night after this disaster, they shared a lot of truths and a lot of pain that Ethan has never really spoken to anyone about before (his mother's death, his instinct to run and avoid so constantly and how he's afraid that means he'll never have anything real, the time before this one where she nearly drowned, where her parents died).
It's a few weeks after that disaster, after the cleanup where he buys her a new pair, leaving them for her on her bed without any wrapping, without any post-it note this time though she'll know who they are from by the handwriting.]
[In the white spots of them, he's written in permanent marker: "Ms. Elena, may nothing ever cruelly steal this pair from your beautiful feet-" is on one shoe. On the other, he finishes it off with: "-but if it does remember there can always be a new pair. You're not alone."
It's what he said to her that night, and it's what he wants to always remind her of.]
